The Art of Matayoshi Kobudo
Matayoshi Kobudo is a traditional Okinawan martial art focusing on the use of indigenous weapons, developed over generations within the Matayoshi family. Unlike systems that emphasize modern sport, Matayoshi Kobudo maintains an archival approach to Ryukyuan history, teaching practitioners to master tools such as the Bo, Sai, Tonfa, and Nunchaku. Through disciplined study, students connect with the artisanal lineage and defensive strategies of the Okinawan masters.

The Legacy of Itokazu Sensei
Kanshin Itokazu Sensei (1936–2010), a close student of Matayoshi Shimpo Sensei, was a dedicated preserver of Okinawa’s cultural and martial arts. Through decades of archival work and instruction at his dojo, he ensured the Matayoshi Kobudo rhythmic soul and combat precision remained intact. His legacy, managed through the Matayoshi Kobudo preservation society, continues through his students globally, bridging the artisanal history of Ryukyu with today’s martial artists.
